Ft.Simpson’s solar project
April 07, 2012
NWT Power Corporation, in partnership with the Government of the Northwest Territories, officially commissioned the North’s largest solar energy project at the Fort Simpson Airport.
- The project cost was $760,000. It is the largest solar PV system in the NWT and larger than any installation north of 60. The entire array is almost 300’ (the length of a football field) x 14’ (91 x 4.2 m) and stands almost 13’ off the ground, about height one-storey building
- The solar PV system will provide enough energy for up to 10 houses in Ft. Simpson. System will provide up to 8.5% of the minimum power requirements in the summer in
Fort Simpson
- System will displace up to 58,000 kWh of diesel generation, equivalent to 15,000 L of diesel fuel or 44.5 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year. The system is connected to the Fort Simpson grid. All customers will benefit from this system
Commentary
It will be interesting to see how successful this solar project is. When will the high capital cost be recovered?
